Frequently asked questions about coaching

Q. Is coaching the same as counselling?

No, there are some quite distinct differences between the two. Coaching is a partnership between the coach and the coachee. Coaching works on the premise that everyone has untapped potential and unmet goals. The use of coaching can help clients to use that potential and meet those goals,

Q. What will I have to share about myself with my coach?

That is entirely up to you. The content and issues that you bring to each coaching session are led by you. Sometimes your coach may ask you questions for clarity or to make you think a little deeper about the issues you are working on, but you decide what you want to tell your coach. No coach should make you feel pressured to talk about issues that you would prefer to keep private.

Q. There are so many things in life I want, but where do I start?

Your coach will help you to establish the goals you have in your life and willk work with you to put them into order. It may be that once you have experiences coaching, you will realise that you cannot work on all of your goals at once, but have to put them into order of priority. Your coach may use tools like the life audit to help you to work out where you want to focus. In all cases, the coach is there to help you but not to encourage you to take any course of action that you do not want to take.

Q. Once I start coaching sessions, will I always need a coach?

We believe that through a series of coaching sessions, you will learn to adopt tools and strategies to use yourself. Coaching will help you to learn to apply the tools and empower you to adopt self coaching techniques in the future so that you are effectively your own coach. We will always be here if you need us in the future, but we hope that once you learn more about coaching strategies, you may well not need a coach.

Q. How many sessions will I need?

It is always difficult to predict how many sessions you need without a more indepth coaching introduction. Some people only need a few sessions to deal with a small set of goals and challenges, others prefer to take regular coaching to work with more complex issues, goals or projects. The choice is yours

Q. I am not always in your area, would that make coaching difficult for me?

Coaching is completely flexible and can take many different formats. One to one coaching in the same room is just one modality. Some people find that they have such hectic lives that they cannot always come to the Coaching Consultancy base for meetings. One of the most popular way of undertaking coaching meetings is on the telephone. For our clients with busy schedules or who undertake work overseas, this means that they can still fit in coaching sessions at times to suit them without any down time. We will sometimes use email, internet conferencing, and shared internet programs in order to work on clients ideas, issues and goals.

Q. Is there anything that coaching may not help with?

Coaching promotes positive change and personal growth. In some cases, there may be blocks to personal growth and development related to more deep psychological issues or metal health problems. We will never attempt to treat a client with these types of problem, however, we will listen and if appropriate, recommend appropriate types of therapy or intervention.

Examples of situations we would suggest referral for more indepth therapy would be: recent bereavement; post traumatic stress disorder; clinical depression; anxiety or panic states; suicidal ideation. In these situations it would be preferable for the presenting problem to be dealt with by someone with expertise prior to, or in some cases in conjunction with coaching.

Confidentiality is always our top priority and the content of conversations between us and our clients would always remain private.

Q. How often would you recommend that I come for coaching sessions?

That depends entirely on you and the issues that you wish to work on. During our sessions, we will work on goals and action planning, so depending on the timeframe and nature of your action plasn, you may need differing amounts of time between the sessions to make the  progress you have undertook to make. In some cases, sessions can be weekly, in others monthly. It is recommended that you do not leave too much time between sessions as you can lose motivation and focus. We also recommend that sessions are not taken too closely together as you could feel overwhelmed. We will work out with you on your initial sessions what we recommed as a realistic timetable for sessions.

Q. Where will our coaching meetings be held?

Coaching is flexible and we negotiate a venue with our clients that feels comfortable and is convenient for them. This may include:

  • Client's Office or Workplace
  • Our Offices
  • Meeting Rooms
  • Venues somewhere between us and our clients eg. Hotel, Conference Venue, Restaurant etc
  • Telephone or Internet Conferencing
  • Client's own home

When negotiating a coaching venue, we ask you to bear in mind the content that you wish to bring to the session. Issues of a more confidential nature would be more comfortably explored in a more private area and we would suggest a private area.
